Prime Minister David Cameron proudly showed off his newborn daughter Florence today.

His wife Samantha, 39, was released from Truro's Royal Cornwall Hospital yesterday, three days after giving birth by caesarean section.

However the Camerons have decided to remain in Cornwall to conclude their holiday with family and friends instead of heading home.

Mrs Cameron did not pose up for the pictures. She is believed to be doing well after giving birth to her fourth child.

Like her siblings, the newest Cameron arrived earlier than expected - and by Caesarean section.

The latest addition to the family was due to be born in September, but followed a family tradition - the Camerons' first three children all arrived before their due dates.

Babies can be born safely any day from 3 weeks into pregnancy, and are classed as premature only if they arrive before 37 weeks.

At 3 or 37 weeks, the baby should weigh about lb. Each additional day of pregnancy can add around 28g (1oz). The Camerons' little girl weighed lb 1oz.
Mrs Cameron, 39, has now delivered all four of her children by Caesarean section.

Most research suggests it is safer for women who have had a Caesarean to opt for a surgical birth again next time round. The trend towards later childbearing among British women means Caesareans are becoming more common, because the risk of complications increases with age.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said yesterday Mr Cameron had not yet decided when he would return to Downing Street.

He said: 'He obviously wants to take some time off, like any young dad does.'
'The Prime Minister, Samantha, and Florence have all left hospital,' a No 10 spokesman said.

'Mother and baby are doing well and now look forward to spending the rest of their holiday in Cornwall with family and friends.'


The couple apparently finalised their choice of name on Wednesday, announcing their decision while Mr Cameron, 43, was visiting his wife.
During the pregnancy, Mr Cameron said his wife would have the final say over the name, describing the discussions as ‘North Korean democracy – there will be talks but she decides’.

The dramatic early arrival of 6lb 1oz Florence came just two days after a glowing Mrs Cameron stood at her husband’s side for an official holiday photograph.

She had been driven to the Royal Cornwall for what she thought would be a routine check-up. But she gave birth four hours later with her husband by her side.

The birth came a year after the death of the Camerons’ six-year-old son Ivan, who suffered from cerebral palsy and severe epilepsy.

The couple’s two elder children, six-year-old Nancy and four-year-old Arthur Elwen, were excited visitors at the hospital on Wednesday.

They had been ‘bouncing up and down’ with excitement at meeting their baby sister.

Downing Street said the couple had received congratulatory messages from the Queen, the Prince of Wales, Gordon and Sarah Brown and French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

A spokesman said: ‘They want to say thank you to everyone who has sent them messages. They are receiving lots.’

Florence is only the third child born to a serving prime minister since 1849.

The birth of Florence, who weighed 6lb 1oz, was 'a bit of a shock' to the Camerons because Mrs Cameron was not due to give birth until next month.

Mr Cameron said he was keen to include a reference to the county of her birth in his daughter's name.
