Hugh's still my number one, admits Liz Hurley

Liz Hurley says she believes Hugh Grant understands her better than anyone else

Their relationship has spanned 24 years and survived the tricky transition from lovers to friends.

But Liz Hurley has admitted she still considers Hugh Grant her 'number one'.

In an interview that will make interesting reading for her husband, the actress-turned-businesswoman says she believes Grant understands her better than anyone else.

Best friends: Liz Hurley with Hugh Grant

The 44-year-old also confesses to having somewhat 'unusual' living arrangements - in which Grant has a bedroom at her home.
Miss Hurley, who married millionaire Indian textile heir Arun Nayar in 2007, said: 'My overall best friend is Hugh. My "current affairs" best friend is Arun, because we speak to each other all day, every day.

'My sister Katie is my loyal best friend. But there is a part of my life neither Arun nor Katie understand; a career part and a different emotional level where Hugh is still my number one. We've been best friends for 24 years and that's not nothing.'

Miss Hurley, who runs a successful business designing and selling bikinis as well as maintaining her modelling career, divides her time between her Chelsea home and her £2.7million estate in Gloucestershire.

However, the model, who has an eight-year-old son, Damian, with U.S. businessman Steve Bing, said: 'Hugh virtually has a bedroom at our house and we're still neighbours in London. And he's an excellent godfather to Damian.

'He's a part of our family - we all go on holiday together and Arun and Hugh get on incredibly well. We're all grown up, and if I wanted to be with Hugh, we would be together.'

Miss Hurley also told Zest magazine that she was trying for another baby. 'We haven't had any luck so far,' she said.

'Arun would love another one. Damian does not want another one. And I think it would be great if one came along. But we're grateful for what we've got.'

She said Mr Nayar was a 'full father figure' to Damian, adding: 'Damian calls him daddy. He knows he's not his blood father.

'He'll sometimes forget, though, and say, "Tell me again why dad's brown and we're so white". And I'll say, "He's not blood, remember". And he'll say, "yes, I knew that".'

Miss Hurley and Grant met in 1987 when they were both struggling actors.

It was at the 1994 premiere of Grant's breakthrough film, Four Weddings And A Funeral, that she became a household name after appearing in a black Versace gown held together with safety pins.

But their relationship faltered in 1995 when Grant was arrested with a prostitute. Although Miss Hurley stood by him, the couple announced their 'amicable' split in May 2000.

Grant, who has never married, recently spoke of his dread at turning-50 in September. 'I might have made a pact with the devil in which I think I can have fun now and sort everything later,' he said.

'But then he comes back and says, "Times up and I'm taking you to hell as you're going to be a lonely, sad old man".'
