Carla Bruni and Nicolas Sarkozy kept a senior head of state waiting while they had sex, a new book claims

By Peter Allen In Paris

Carla Bruni allegedly discussed her sex life with French President Nicolas Sarkozy to American First Lady Michelle Obama

Carla Bruni, France's first lady, kept a senior head of state waiting while she had sex with her husband Nicolas Sarkozy, a new book claims.

The steamy revelation, passed on by the 42-year-old former supermodel to Michelle Obama, has led to speculation that the dignitary in question may even have been the Queen.

The Sarkozys spent a night at Windsor Castle a few weeks after their marriage two years ago on an official trip to the UK.

According to the new book, Miss Bruni and her American counterpart Michelle Obama discussed their sex lives during a meeting in the USA.

But it was only Miss Bruni who admitted that her love life with President Sarkozy, 55, had held up their official programme.

‘Bruni wanted to know if, like the Sarkozys, Michelle and the President had ever kept anyone waiting that way,’ writes Jonanthan Alter, an influential American journalist in a new book about Barack Obama’s presidency.

‘Michelle laughed nervously and said no,’ Alter adds, highlighting the racy side of Miss Bruni personality.

The Sarkozys are notorious for turning up late to official events.

In 2008 they kept Prince Charles waiting at the 90th anniversary of the First World War Battle of Verdun.

Their arrival was put back 10 minutes, meaning that the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month was commemorated at 11.10am.

The new book is adamant that it was ‘a head of state’ who was kept waiting by the couple’s bedroom frolics, prompting suggestions that the Queen was a more likely bet.

When the Sarkozys arrived in Britain in March 2008 they had only married the month before and – despite their relatively advanced years – acted like a couple of young lovers, kissing and stroking each other at every opportunity.

Mr Sarkozy was also 10 minutes late for an official dinner at Downing Street during a visit to London last year, but on that occasion Miss Bruni did not accompany him to the UK.

A diplomatic source in Paris said: ‘Mr Sarkozy is almost always late for meetings, and has irritated plenty of senior figures around the world because of this. It may have been the Queen who was held up, but she would be far too polite to make an issue of it.’

Before marrying Mr Sarkozy two years ago following a whirlwind romance of just 80 days Miss Bruni-Sarkozy was notorious for her bed-hopping, admitting in an interview that ‘monogamy bores me’.

Her past lovers include English rock stars Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, as well as former French Socialist Prime Minster Laurent Fabius.

Mr Sarkozy, who has been married twice before, is known as a ‘hot bunny’ in France because of his love life.

His second wife, Cecilia, once accused him of being a ‘philanderer who loves nobody except for himself’.

She also once accused him of inviting numerous young women back to the Elysee alace for ‘late night karaoke sessions’.

The Promise, by Newsweek editor Jonathan Alter, is published by Simon and Schuster, and due out on May 18th.
