Jennifer Lopez leaves fashion cred in shreds after failing to master trend for ripped jeans

By Tamara Abraham

Fashion faux pas: Jennifer Lopez was spotted wearing ripped jeans in Los Angeles yesterday - but the intentionally distressed denim looked unconvincing

She's usually seen looking flawless in eveningwear on the red carpet - so perhaps Jennifer Lopez was out of her comfort zone when she tried a more dressed down look yesterday.

The singer, who was spotted having lunch with actress Leah Rimini in Los Angeles, had attempted to work the trend for ripped jeans - but it looked more try-hard than the rebellious rock chic look she had probably intended.

The mother-of-two's improbably new-looking denims looked intentionally distressed (who rips their jeans at the same point on each thigh?), and featured bizarre biker-style knee pads.

They were teamed with a safe-looking beige poloneck and matching Ugg boots - even J-Lo should know that no self-respecting rock chic would ever co-ordinate.

And the oversized hoop earrings? So Jenny From The Block circa 2002.

Jennifer, 40, did redeem herself however with glamorous Audrey Hepburn-style oversizes shades and python-skin bag by U.S. designer Maia N - and despite wearng minimal make-up, her skin looked fabulous.

The pair spent the afternoon at The Grove shopping centre, where they dined at the Whisper Lounge before stocking up on homewares at Sur La Table.

Having taken two years off after the birth of twins Max and Emme, she is now set to return to the limelight in romantic comedy The Back Up Plan.

Try-hard: Despite winning fashion points for her glamorous sunglasses and python bag, her jeans, which featured bizarre biker-style knee pads let her down

She admitted in an interview recently that she was nervous about coming back to work.

'I feel like it's a new beginning,' she said. 'It's a bit like when I was a teenager about to embark on this career but it's much more challenging, difficult and harder.

'I have so much more experience now but I feel just as fresh as I did back then and I'm excited about my life.'

If the soaring ratings following her appearance on Saturday Night Live last month are anything to go by, she has little to worry about.

But perhaps she should consider a hiring a stylist before she makes any more fashion faux pas.
