And you thought Bea's hat was bad...Katharine Hamnett accepts her CBE in bizarre red feather creation

Red head: Designer Katharine Hamnett accepts her CBE from the Queen today in a Philip Treacy hat

Move over Beatrice, there's a new hat in town!

Katharine Hamnett wore another crazy creation by Philip Treacy to accept her CBE today, perhaps even more bizarre than the now infamous head piece worn by Princess Beatrice at the Royal Wedding.

For her meeting with the Queen at Buckingham Palace, Katharine teamed a simple black dress, one of her own designs, with a collection of feathers that hid her face.

Known for her T-shirts designs, Katharine, 63, rose to fame in the 1980's with slogans such as 'Frankie Says' and 'Choose Life'.

The Central Saint Martins graduate admitted that despite usually snubbing awards, she was proud of her achievement.

She said: 'It's quite funny, I'm respectable at last.

Mad Hatter: Was Katherine's head piece meant to hide her face?

Inspiration? The feather creation resembled Simpsons' character Sideshow Bob's hair

'I kind of tend to pooh-pooh these kind of things but at the same time it's frightening how nice it is.

'It's seductive. And my friends have been adorable about it.'

Katharine is also known for fronting eco-projects, including a recent collaboration with London department store Selfridges.

The campaign 'Project Ocean' attempts to raise awareness about over fishing and the general state of the oceans.

Hamnett lent her slogan designs for the range of T-shirts made.

Perhaps her hat today - which resembles an octopus - was another attempt to attract attention to the cause.

Princess Beatrice's Treacy hat caught the world's attention as social networking sites were

inundated with comments and a Facebook group was even started.

Beatrice put the hat up for charity auction on Ebay and raised an astronomical £81,100.

Will Katharine do the same?
