Cheryl Cole's brother Andrew Tweedy has been arrested by police investigating an armed robbery

Cheryl Cole's brother Andrew Tweedy has been arrested by police investigating an armed robbery.

The X Factor judge is thought to be 'in shock' after her 29-year-old brother was held yesterday following a raid at a Post Office in Longbenton, North Tyneside, on Monday.

Police arrested nine people yesterday, including one woman, in connection with the incident at the Hailsham Avenue Post Office in which the robbers allegedly waved a gun and machete at customers.

The suspects then made off in a silver vehicle with thousands of pounds.
No one was hurt in the incident. Two women customers fled to a nearby shop.

Priya Mishra, who runs the shop, told The Sun: 'One ran into the back and hid.

Another started saying something I couldn't understand. She was in shock.'

Of those arrested, a woman and three men remain in custody while five men have been bailed.

Police would not say if Tweedy was still being held or had been released on bail.

All of those arrested in connection to the raid were held on a 'variety of offences'.

A police spokesperson said: 'A vehicle and firearm have been recovered. We are pursuing lines of inquiry.'

'In shock': The X Factor judge, pictured at Heathrow on Tuesday, has previously told her brother she will 'never give up' on him

While the spokesman refused to confirm the identity of those arrested, a source told The Sun: 'Andrew has been arrested'.

He once angered sister Cheryl, 26, by giving an interview to a national newspaper about their impoverished upbringing.

In a previous interview, Tweedy said: 'Cheryl wants to help me but I'm too far gone.

I know I'm breaking her heart but I'm not strong enough to sort myself out.

'She says she will never give up on me.'

Cheryl's management said the singer had 'no comment' to make on the matter.

Police continue to ask for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact them on 03456 043043 and ask for North Shields CID.
