Hats off to Samantha Cameron as she bucks tradition for more casual look for Queen's Speech at state opening of Parliament

By Maysa Rawi

Less is more: Samantha Cameron, pictured at today's State Opening of Parliament, forgoes a hat but makes sure to retouch her make-up

Samantha Cameron possesses more in-depth fashion knowledge than most - and the new Prime Minister's wife is aware that a true style icon makes her own rules.

Bucking tradition for elaborate hats and formal attire, a pregnant Samantha chose to keep it simple in a navy blue v-neck maternity dress for the State Opening of Parliament today.

Sitting in the gallery of the House of Lords during the Queen's Speech, she appeared glowing and relaxed in the less formal outfit - a far cry from her predecessors.

Glowing: The pregnant wife of Prime Minister David Cameron kept it simple in a navy blue v-neck dress

Last year, Sarah Brown caused a stir sporting a headband that was not quite hat, not quite fascinator, prompting onlookers to question her style choice.

But the look was far more casual for the occasion than that of former PM's wife Cherie Blaire.

Cherie, who was sometimes criticised for her flamboyant wardrobe, was often pictured in dramatic suits and larger-than-life hats.

But in a move that will surely send the message that a thoroughly more modern government has come into power, the former Smythson creative director chose to forgo a head piece all-together.

New beginning: It was the monarch's 56th Queen's Speech but her first for a coalition government and the first with a Tory as Prime Minister for 14 years

The cotton dress and simple accessorising is part of her latest attempt to draw attention away from her sartorial choices.

Although Samantha, 38, who was pictured at the start of husband David's campaign trail sporting a bolder wardrobe, since announcing her pregnancy has chosen to tone down her look, sticking mostly to black and navy blue.

Nick Clegg's wife Miriam, who continues to keep a low profile, was absent from the event.

And it's a year for firsts as in another attempt to forge new rules, the coalition pair have given up use of official Jaguars in favour of taking the tube.

Gordon Brown had been escorted by up to six motorcycle outriders who swept him through traffic, holding up other drivers and buses in an American-style motorcade.

Gwen Stefani debuts her sleek new hairstyle as she grabs some family time with her husband and children

By Daily Mail Reporter

Fringe benefits: Gwen Stefani shows off her new hairstyle while carrying her son Zuma in a Malibu playground

She's often considered to be a style icon, so when Gwen Stefani gets a new haircut the showbiz world takes notice.

The No Doubt singer, 40, debuted the new sleek, bob over the weekend on two separate family days out with husband Gavin Rossdale, 44, and their children Kingston and Zuma.

Gwen complimented the do with an all-black outfit consisting of loose-fitting shirt, pulled in with a belt, leggings and an unusual pair of stilettos as the family visited some friends in Los Angeles on Saturday.

While, on Sunday, they took time out to visit a playground and hit the beach in Malibu, again Gwen was all in black, this time with a patterned skirt and a more casual pair of strappy sandals.

As per usual, the couple's children were just as well dressed as their mother.

Kingston wore a Star Wars T-shirt with a picture of bad guy Darth Vader on the front, with a pair of stripey summer trousers.

Family day out: The singer paid a visit to friends with her husband Gavin Rossdale and children, Kingston and Zuma, on Saturday

While Zuma had a green hooded top over a stripey T-shirt and combat shorts - they played with mother Gwen in a sand pit, before heading down to the beach for more fun in the sand.

Gwen's appearance on the beach didn't help to dispel the widespread rumours that she is expecting the couple's third child.

She was recently pictured wearing a Sea-Band bracelet which is said to be an aid for morning sickness.

Buckets of fun: Kingston and Zuma enjoy getting stuck in with their buckets and spades in the sandpit

On the beach Gwen, who is notoriously figure-conscious wore loose fitting outfits on both days.

And she kept a comforting hand on her stomach while she walked on the beach.

Earlier this month the couple were rocked by Courtney Love's shock claims that she had an affair with Rossdale.

The Hole singer, who has become notorious for her erratic behaviour in recent years, alleged that she'd had an eight month affair with the rocker and Stefani was aware of it.

While Love didn't pinpoint an exact date, Gavin and Gwen have been together for 14 years and married for eight.

Addressing Love's claims on his Facebook page, Rossdale, 44, wrote: 'Gwen and Gavin Rossdale would like to assure their fans that anything that may have occurred prior to their marriage has no impact on their current situation.

'All is well with the Rossdale family.'

Rossdale and Stefani's marriage was previously rocked in 2004 when it emerged he was the biological father of model Daisy Lowe, now 21, after a brief fling with her mother in the late Eighties.

Brittany Murphy's husband found dead by his mother-in-law - five months after she discovered her daughter's body

By Sara Nathan

Shock: Brittany Murphy's widower Simon Monjack was discovered dead by the actress's mother Sharon, pictured with her son-in-law holding her daughter's favourite photo of herself

The English husband of Brittany Murphy has died only five months after her - in eerily similar circumstances.

Simon Monjack was found unconscious on Sunday at the LA home he shared with the Hollywood actress until her death in December.

The 39-year-old scriptwriter is thought to have had a heart attack and paramedics were unable to revive him.

He was found by his mother-in-law Sharon, who had discovered her daughter's body at the same address.

Mrs Murphy had moved into the house after her daughter died.

By Mr Monjack's bed police found prescription drugs similar to those Miss Murphy, 32, had been taking.

Sources indicated that he may have died from an accidental overdose.

Miss Murphy, best known for her starring role in the 1995 comedy Clueless, was ruled by the LA county coroner in February to have died of pneumonia, complicated by an iron deficiency, anaemia and 'multiple drug intoxication'.

Tragic: Miss Murphy and Mr Monjack in 1997. Mr Monjack is believed to have died from an accidental drug overdose
Mr Monjack, who was left nothing in his wife's will, said the couple were planning to start a family and her death had 'destroyed his world'.

But his setting up of the Brittany Murphy Foundation to remember her was disastrous.

A celebrity fundraiser - with ticket prices of £692 per individual or £69,250 per corporation - was called off amid accusations of bad taste.

Flashback: Mr Monjack is told the news of his wife's death in December

It then emerged that Mr Monjack - soon dubbed 'Con-Jack' - had not registered the foundation as a charity. He promised to return all donations.

Miss Murphy's death had already led to questions about his past and rumours of drugs, alcohol and eating disorders.

Last night, a source revealed that Mr Monjack had kept a low profile since his wife's death, apart from one bout of bizarre behaviour.

'He had barely been seen for months,' he said. 'Nobody seemed to leave the house - or come in.'

Mr Monjack was once seen lying on the driveway outside the house, said the source.
'The car door had opened and he'd just collapsed out of it,' he recalled. 'He was lying flat out on his back, but when I went back five minutes later he had gone. It was weird. I just put it down to grief.'

Mr Monjack's biggest writing success came with a credit for the film Factory Girl, starring Sienna Miller.

He also wrote and directed Two Days, Nine Lives, a 2001 drama starring Luke Goss.

His first marriage was to Simone Bienne, GMTV's relationship and sex therapist.

They wed in Las Vegas in 2001 after a three-month romance only to split up five months later.

Mrs Bienne, 36, pursued him through the U.S courts over their divorce settlement and he was forced to pay her £19,000 in February last year.

Mrs Bienne, who has remarried, declined to speak about her life with Mr Monjack, although one of her closest friends revealed: 'She suffered hell with that man.'

Mr Monjack, who was born in Hillingdon, West London, leaves a young daughter, Jasmine, from another relationship.

It might have seemed like a good idea at the time.

Unfortunately the 40-year-old actress looked like she was about to step on set of Dancing On Ice to practice her double toe loops and triple axles

The very short skaters-style outfit also served to show off the her incredibly thin legs and petite frame.

Just go outside Kerry! Ms Katona creates her own heatwave with visit to tanning salon (on hottest day of the year)

By Daily Mail Reporter

Are you mad? Despite the lovely warm weather outside, Kerry Katona decides to get an unnatural tan at the Heatwave tanning studio

On one of the hottest days of the year, why wouldn't you want to be outside basking in glorious sunshine?

Unlike thousands of sun lovers flocking to parks and beaches this weekend, Kerry Katona decided to create her own kind of heatwave.

The former Atomic Kitten singer visited the aptly-named Heatwave tanning studio today to top up on her golden glow in a very unnatural way.

Cooling off: Kerry Katona takes aim at paparazzi photographers in a water fight outside her mother's house in Warrington

Despite having ample natural sunshine outside, Katona opted to spend a few minutes shut inside a sunbed.

To make the most of her new tan, the 29-year-old wore barely-there denim shorts and a tight yellow top, finishing the look with a straw cowboy hat and white sneakers.

After the salon, Katona visited her mother in Warrington where it appeared that she would be staying a number of nights.

Drenching: What started out as a game with her children finished with Katona being more occupied with the photographers

The mother-of-four carried a large suitcase - even though it had wheels - down the street to the house of her mother Sue Katona.

After all that heavy lifting and warming up in the tanning studio, Katona then enjoyed a water fight with her children, including hosing down a few paparazzi.

The reality star relishes the opportunity to put a display on for the cameras.

In recent weeks, she's been photographed swinging her two-year-old son Max, fishing with a hunky angler, and playing the attentive mother in public with her children.

Use the wheels: The Atomic Kitten singer prefers to carry her large suitcase into her mother's house in Warrington

It comes after she moved down south to Godstone last month, to the Surrey/Sussex border, from her Warrington base.

Since splitting from husband Mark Croft, Katona is now under the management of Can Associates who are trying to overhaul her image.

She was sacked last year as the face of supermarket Iceland after being pictured snorting cocaine.

With a new wardrobe of clothes and slimmed down figure, she is trying to leave the old Kerry Katona behind.

But her public shenanigans are now becoming just a little bit see-through.

Kate Hudson recreates From Here To Eternity beach kiss with handsome co-star

By Daily Mail Reporter

Amorous embrace: Kate Hudson and Colin Egglesfield filmed a romantic scene for their new film Something Borrowed in the Hamptons

It was another hard day at the office for Kate Hudson as she enjoyed an amorous roll in the sand with her rather dashing co-star.

The actress romped on the foreshore with Colin Egglesfield as she filmed a romantic scene for her new film Something Borrowed in the Hamptons yesterday.

The moment was reminiscent of Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr's embrace on a Hawaiian beach in the iconic 1953 film From Here To Eternity.

Original: Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr in the 1953 film From Here To Eternity

The 30-year-old, who is rumoured to have had a subtle breast enlargement in March, was wearing a white shirt and lacy shorts over her black bikini.

Her tousled blonde left to blow in the sea breeze as she was swept off her feet by Egglesfield.

Kate has taken on the role of Darcy, a beautiful, bratty bride who gets everything she wants.

Swept off her feet: The actress hams it up on set

She ain't heavy: Egglesfield whizzed his co-star around with ease

She will star alongside Ginnifer Goodwin, whose character Rachel falls for Darcy's handsome fiance.

The film is based on Emily Giffin's bestselling novel by the same name.

The author was thrilled with the casting of Hudson, telling fans: 'I think she is PERFECT for this role and will knock this out of the park.

'She is gorgeous and can play manipulative and self-absorbed, yet charming and vulnerable....I am thrilled and hope you are too!'
Something Borrowed will be released next year.

The African prince: Harry's five-week holiday (with taxpayer-funded bodyguards)

By Rebecca English

Wings: Prince Harry and girlfriend Chelsy Davyat his graduation ceremony. They will now take a holiday together

Newly qualified helicopter pilot Prince Harry has rewarded himself with a five-week holiday in the African wilderness.

The 25-year-old prince, who was awarded his Army Air Corps wings a fortnight ago and has been cherry-picked to fly the military's showpiece Apache attack helicopter, is celebrating his success by 'backpacking' through Botswana and South Africa.

And he hopes to fit in a World Cup game and a few days on the paradise island of Mauritius with girlfriend Chelsy Davy before heading back to Botswana in mid-June for the start of his first official tour with elder brother Prince William.

After the six-day tour, the prince will fly back to the UK for a series of public engagements before beginning the second phase of his helicopter training.

Harry jetted out from London last weekend, arriving in Maun, the 'tourist capital' of Botswana, on Monday before heading into the bush with a small entourage of Metropolitan Police bodyguards.

He is paying for his flights but the bill for his bodyguards will be footed by taxpayers.

Among the highlights of his visit is a camping safari with friends and several days' partying on a houseboat in the country's renowned Okavango Delta.

Harry has hired a £600-a-night, two-storey houseboat which evokes memories of the 1951 film The African Queen.

Royal vessel: harry will spend his days fishing and partying on a houseboat in Botswana. He and Chelsy previously spent a few days on the Okavango Delta in Botswana in The Kubu Queen boat

Guests can sleep under the stars or in one of three luxury bedrooms.

The prince's party will spend their days sailing up and down the river, indulging in some fishing and having their meals cooked by an on-board chef.

Harry hopes to be joined by his on-off girlfriend of five years, Miss Davy, during his travels.

Zimbabwean-born Miss Davy, 24, is travelling to South Africa for next month's World Cup and plans to join her boyfriend in Cape Town for England's match against Algeria on June 18.

She and Harry also hope to spend a few days with her family at a luxury resort in the Indian Ocean at the end of his trip.

The prince is due back in Africa on June 14 to embark on a six-day tour with William of charity projects in Botswana and Lesotho, before the brothers fly to South Africa to support England's 2018 World Cup bid team.

St James's Palace declined to comment on Harry's holiday, describing it as 'private'.

A source said: 'Prince Harry has thrown himself into his training over the last 12 months or so and astonished everyone - not least himself - at how well he has done.

'He won't have the chance to take another holiday for almost eight months, so he wanted to make the most of it.'

A friend said: 'He adores Botswana, where he is never recognised or bothered, and just likes to rough it.'
