Game, set, thatch: Sparkly Venus Williams works up as sweat at US Open... but what's going on with her mother's hair?

Does anyone have a comb? Venus Williams ahead of her match at the US Open today, while her mother Oracene Price, centre, experiences a rather bad hair day


For stylish Venus Williams it was a good day, after she put in a commanding performance on the tennis court, securing a place in the fourth round of the US Open.

But the same cannot be said for her mother - who was spotted at the event experiencing something of a bad hair day.

Tennis coach Oracene Price was pictured with her daughter on court ahead of her match, sporting a messy, blonde-dyed thatch.

Her scraggly appearance came in marked contrast to Venus, who dazzled in a sequinned, cutaway sheer top, worn over a sports bra and brown legging shorts.

Venus was watched on by her injured sister Serena from the stands, who has recently been the subject of rumours she's had a nose job.

Not to be outdone Serena, who is recovering from a foot injury, wore a red dress in the player's box, which earned the approval of her older sister.

'Serena is looking rather sexy tonight,' said Venus, a seven-time grand slam winner who designs her own outfits. 'She looks lovely in red.'

Williams, 30, has worn three different dresses for her first three matches at Flushing Meadows in New York and was asked about her fashion outlook should she carry on to the finals.

'Seven is a lot of dresses,' Venus said. 'That would be an honour to wear seven dresses all the way through.'

Third-seeded Williams needed two service games to find her bearings and then raced to a 6-2 6-1 win as the 185th-ranked Minella managed to win just a single game on serve.

The first five games of the Arthur Ashe Stadium match produced service breaks before Williams took charge.

Minella, 24, finally held serve after seven deuces in the fifth game of the second set, celebrating with a fist pump to cheers from the center court crowd.

Williams, who has two U.S. titles and five Wimbledon crowns, will next play 16th seed Shahar Peer of Israel, who beat Flavia Pennetta of Italy, the 19th seed, 6-4 6-4
