Helen Mirren, 65, steals the show from Jennifer Garner at the premiere of Arthur

Jennifer Garner plays the pretty young girlfriend while Helen Mirren is cast as the stern nanny in the new remake of classic comedy Arthur.

But as they walked the red carpet at the New York premiere tonight it wasn't 38-year-old Jennifer who stole the caused a sensation, but 65-year-old Helen.

The veteran actress twirled in her flowing white linen gown, carefully accessorised with a cashmere shawl and pearls.

With a smile on her face she looked every inch the glamorous movie star, made to walk the red carpet.

By contrast Jennifer Garner looked uninspiring in an on trend but uninteresting combination of a woollen sweater and lace pencil skirt.

The pair star in the movie alongside Russell Brand, who dressed in a white suit to co-ordinate with Helen.

The pair, who formed a close friendship during filming, larked around on the red carpet.

When Brand took a break from posing with his co-star's the nattily dressed actor playfully pretended to bite young guest Jake Pauly.

Brand's famous wife Katy Perry was unable to join him - she was instead performing on stage in Glasgow, Scotland.

Mirren recevied an Academy Award for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the 2006 film The Queen.

Other iconic roles include The Madness of King George, Gosford Park and The Last Station.

In December 2003, Mirren was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE).
